Vortex Optics Diamondback HD 10×42 binoculars Overview
A great offering from a trusted brand, these Vortex Optics have a shockproof rubber design, fully multi coated, fog proof lenses and an O-ring seal essential for waterproofing.
Tough well-armored body
This affordable pair of binoculars equips you well for challenging weather conditions. With their slip-proof rubberized armor, the ergonomics of these birding binoculars mean they handle well in inclement weather.
The sturdy construction gives them the feel of durable binoculars, protected against knocks and drops. On balance, the binoculars are lightweight and portable at 21 ounces.
Its multi-coated lenses and effective light transmission ensure bright images while guarding against flaring in bright sunlight or when looking in the direction of strong light reflected off water.
Good color representation
There is some chromatic aberration within the image. But considering the price range – entry level – the accurate color reproduction is good. Image quality does lose a little bit of sharpness towards the edges.
Eye relief is quite short at 15mm so these are not great for people who wear eyeglasses or sunglasses when birding. The eyepieces have two different settings.
The eyepiece caps are soft and flexible, making them easy to remove. One thing to note is that the diopter only adjusts the right-hand lens.
Attractive warranty
Weightwise, the Vortex Optics Diamondback HD birding binoculars compete well at a relative light weight for their 10×42 specification.
Vortex Optics offer a reassuringly simple unlimited lifetime warranty. They promise to repair or replace a product free of charge in the event of accidental breakage or damage.

Dimensions 5.6” x 5.1”
Pros
- Hardwearing build and design with easy grip features
- Light weight for what they offer
- Wide field of view – better than the Vortex Diamondbacks
- Great performance in dimmer light conditions
Cons
- Close focus distance is quite long at over 8 ft
- Lens covers are no the best
Nikon Monarch 7 10X42 binoculars Overview
The Monarch series of binoculars are a notch up from Nikon’s Prostaff series.
It’s easy to turn the large, ridged central focusing knob, using one and a half turns for fine tuning.
Top-notch glass elements
They feature all the top glass elements that you could wish for, being fully multi-coated. The roof prisms are dielectric-coated and phase-corrected.
Extra-low dispersion (ED) glass is intended to minimize chromatic aberration. With the Monarch 7 this is indeed very minimal, especially with paler subjects. Vivid contrast and color pops through the lens.
Impressive in low light
The 10×42 size gives detailed views and the Monarch 7s gather light well through their 42mm objective lenses for bright images in low light. These binoculars do well in dimmer light conditions.
Robust but light chassis
The chassis is made from fiber glass-reinforced polycarbonate, keeping the binoculars impressively lightweight considering how tough they feel.
The body of the binoculars feels solidly shockproof, with the housing protected against bumps and well waterproofed. Rubber eye cups twist up into position but might seem a little loose.
Tripod adaptable
You would be buying from an extremely reputable optics company. With this in mind, the quality of the included accessories is a little disappointing.
The stiff plastic eyepiece covers don’t stay on too well, although the rubber objective lens covers are attached so they can’t get lost. While the case has a belt loop and is soft and pliable, it may be worth investing in a more protective one.
The included strap seems comfortably padded though. The Monarch 7 can be adapted for use with a tripod so that you can stabilize your images.

Weight 25.6 oz
Dimensions 5.5” x 4.6”
Pros
- Compact ergonomic construction is well balanced
- Impact-resistant rubber armor
- Excellent field of view and near focus distance
- Stunning image clarity
Cons
- Diopter does not have a locking facility
- No carry strap included, even at this price point
Leica Trinovid 10X42 HD binoculars Overview
Their compactness compromises nothing in terms of comfort. They still feel easy to hold. Weighing in at over 25 ounces, they are quite heavy but well balanced in the hand.
The armored coating is finished well and looks good. It has a solid feel, without feeling heavy or sticky.
Top of the range color
The view comes through with great sharpness and brightness. High definition glass minimizes color aberration and maximizes the brilliant color representation and contrast for which Leica is famed.
They are fully waterproof and nitrogen-filled to prevent fogging. They are highly resistant to adverse weather conditions.
Excellent field of view
The field of view is excellent at 355 feet at 1000 yards. This is a similar field of view to an 8x model. So you are still getting the wide view and ability to scan easily, but with the added bonus of a 10x magnification.
The Leica Trinovids even do well with the close focus, which is only 5.3 feet.
To focus, the central focussing knob is smooth and easy. It takes almost two full turns of the ridged central wheel, so it is a bit slower to focus, though this allows for really fine tuning.
To set them up, the diopter is on the right side eyepiece. It would’ve been better if it was lockable, but it’s not available at this price point.
Good eye relief
With eye relief in excess of 15mm these binoculars it’s good news for eyeglasses wearers. The Leica Trinovids are suitable for use with glasses, especially because the ocular lens has less of a curve than other binoculars that also quote eye relief as 15mm.
To adjust and extend the rubber eyepieces if you don’t wear glasses, there are about half a dozen preassigned click stops as you twist them out.
Established name
You’re buying from a well established company that has been around for decades – and even had their binoculars used in space! Leica will almost certainly be around for many more decades in order to offer you customer support and servicing.
